In conclusion, I found Alien: Isolation to be a superbly-crafted science fiction horror experience. I've attempted to play the Survivor Mode challenges - note the word "attempted" - and they are brutal, but also insanely fun. I've played the Crew Expendable and Last Survivor DLCs as well, and they are equally pants-soiling - as well as fantastic for being able to step into Ellen Ripley's shoes. But at the end of the day, I can understand why that difficulty level's prompt describes it as "the way the game was meant to be played." It was absolutely horrifying. The Xenomorph is vicious, the androids are relentless, and the tension and anxiety are palpable.

In retrospect, my longer-than-average playtime can be attributed to 1) the fact that I am, in general, a very slow gamer, and 2) I played on Hard. Even when I was repairing a panel or device for what seemed like the seventeenth time, I still couldn't resist the need to check behind me or around the box I was hiding behind to ensure that our friendly neighborhood Alien wasn't lurking just beyond the shadows. There were numerous stretches of the experience where I could only play for about 15 to 20 minutes before I pulled a "nope" and quickly exited the game, thinking never to look back - only to return the next night to the terrifying hallways of Sevastopol.Īs has been said numerous times before, the story and characters left much to be desired - the entire game was essentially scary fetch quests in space - but I want to emphasize that this did nothing to diminish the horror elements of the game. My experience with horror games is rather limited (something I'm keen on changing in the near future), so this likely isn't saying much, but it was one of the most horrifying games I have ever played. Now for my thoughts: It's also a fantastic horror game with regards to its atmosphere, art direction, sound design, and horror gameplay elements.

Just to preface: The reason I included my playtime in the title is because according to, it shouldn't have taken me really much longer than 25 hours based on my gameplay style, and it took me almost ten hours longer than that.
